  “That’s great for you,” Eugene cut in, his voice holding a certain amount of tension and anger, “but you got a mate. I lost the woman I thought was my mate. You know what? I don’t think this was a good idea after all. Some things are better left unsaid.”

  “I’m sorry,” Utopia said. “I shouldn’t have pushed.”

  Eugene glared at her but deflated before Liam felt the need to defend his mate. The Major turned back to his soup with a shrug. “No, it’s fine. I did need to say it. I’m sorry for snapping at you.”

  Utopia put her hand on his comfortingly. Eugene twitched, as though he wanted to pull away. Once more, Liam opened his mouth to snap at the Major to be polite, and once again it proved to be unnecessary. He patted Utopia’s hand and smiled at her.

  “Thank you,” he said genuinely toward her. “And I’m sorry that I haven’t been friendlier with you. It’s not because of you. I get why you did what you did, and I don’t have any hard feelings. I think you’ve been punished enough for it. It’s the Alpha’s fault, not yours.”

  Utopia bent her head. “Thanks. I wish others felt the same way… But I understand why they don’t. I’m going to have to earn my place here. And I’m ready and willing to do that.”

  “I’d say you’re well on your way. Adam told me that Maura has decided to offer you an official position at the hospital. With pay and everything.” He winked. “That’s gotta feel nice.”

  “It does.” Utopia leaned forward, her eyes brightening.

  Liam relaxed, letting her explain when and why that decision had been made. He was glad that the offer had been extended. Utopia worked with Erica anyway, and this meant she was going to be allowed to treat patients, too. It was a huge step in the right direction. Proof that Maura had decided that she was an asset, that Fiona was convinced she wasn’t going to sell them out to the Pack, and that Patrick had accepted her relationship with Liam.

  “Erica is officially the new chief physician, so I’ll be placed under her,” Utopia finished. “And it’s fun, being with her.”

  “Oh, but I thought you were with Liam,” Eugene was quick to snark back. He grinned as Liam glowered. “Or are you telling me that this is a threesome situation? Bet Cooper’s furious with that. He’s had his eye on Erica ever since she came to the Academy.”

  Utopia’s cheeks turned a brilliant shade of red.

  Liam laughed as he pulled her against him and kissed the top of her head. “You’re embarrassing my mate, Eugene. Apologize.”

  Eugene smirked. “I’m sorry for embarrassing you, Utopia.”

  “Don’t be.” Utopia fiddled with her napkin as her cheeks went even redder. “But the days of my threesomes are over.”

  Eugene belted out a full-bodied laugh. He clapped his hands together. “Well, I guess that is one thing I can be grateful for, eh? My days are not over. I can go ahead and keep frequenting bars and clubs. Just be a real gross man looking for some gross sex.”

  “Now that’s the spirit.” Liam clapped him on the back. “Don’t give up these days so easily.”

  Eugene grinned. He stood and gathered his untouched soup. “Well, I had better get back at it. I have lots of paperwork to do.”

  He left, looking brighter than he had when they first came in. Utopia shook her head as she tucked into her fries.

  “He’s going to get himself hurt,” she declared.

  “Yeah, well, he’s already hurting. Otherwise, I would have told him that his sex can’t get any grosser than ours.” Liam nuzzled into Utopia’s neck.

  She pushed him away, rolling her eyes. “Really? You call what we do gross? Way to make a girl feel good about herself. Besides, we’ve been basic. Missionary, cowgirl. Basic.”

  Liam caught her hand and ate the fry in her fingers. “Is that a challenge, Dr. Tennet?”

  He licked her fingers, and Utopia’s eyes went dark with lust. “We can reheat this, right?”

  Liam sucked on her middle finger.

  “Yeah, we can,” Utopia said. She jumped to her feet. “Alright, then. You’ve got forty-five minutes to show me just how gross you can get.”

  “Love to,” Liam purred. He grabbed a handful of fries and shoved him into his mouth before giving her an oily, salty kiss. “Trust me, you’re going to love it, too.”
