To my loved ones B & B, who encouraged me to fly toward my dream:
Let’s soar.
Chapter One
Two Months Ago
Miriam twisted her hands against the ropes that held her fast. She could hear her two kidnappers arguing passionately with one another but couldn’t make out the individual words. Her heart pounded in her chest, bile tasting on her tongue. She’d always known that the wolf shifters of Devil Mountain were no good, but she hadn’t realized it went this far!
Tears burned against her eyes as once more she tried to wrap her head around how she had gotten here. It seemed so impossible! The day had been so beautiful. Bright sun. The smells and sounds of the forest all around her, beautiful and refreshing. And then…
It all went to hell.
She hadn’t heard them until she padded down the deer trail and into the small clearing she thought would be the perfect spot for a picnic. And there they were. Shovels in hand, digging into the earth.
Miriam had known instantly that they had murdered the man lying at their feet. She tried to run, but they grabbed her. Fighting did no good against their strength. They were wolves, after all. One of them conked her out and she woke up here.
A shiver ran down her spine as the two wolves strode back into the room.
Lucas and Kristoff. Two of the twelve wolf shifters of Devil Mountain, who had showed up in Deville six or seven years ago and stayed isolated in their mountain cabins ever since.
Miriam had never bothered to learn their last names. She’d always known these two were especially shady. All of the wolves kept to themselves, but these ones always gave her a certain… feeling. Now they stared at her with mirrored frowns. Terror and dread swept through her.
“Well, Miriam Potter,” Lucas rumbled as he leaned against the doorframe, “it seems you’ve gotten yourself into a bit of trouble. What were you doing up on my property? Didn’t you see the signs? I don’t like people poking around in my business.”
Miriam shook her head miserably. “I came in from the logging road over on the west side. I was looking for somewhere I could take my nephews hiking for a picnic, and maybe camping. I didn’t know I’d crossed onto private property.”
Tears sprang to her eyes as she struggled to hold herself together. Now wasn’t the time to lose her head. But the thought of dying up here, of leaving her nephews with yet another person to just disappear from their lives… it hurt too much for words. That was the only thought that ran through her mind. What would happen to them if she died? Who was going to take care of them if she wasn’t here?
Kristoff stepped forward and she cringed back from him.
“Please,” she blurted, unable to stop herself. Tears ran down her face, her throat swelling. She wanted to just collapse into a ball of tears and snot but forced herself to stay upright. To look into their eyes and search for some sign of basic humanity in them. “Please, I have to get home to my nephews. They don’t have anybody else.”
Kristoff snorted.
“They don’t!” She yanked at the ropes but they just rubbed her skin raw. “My brother dropped them off at the beginning of the summer. Just left them with me, saying that he and his girlfriend were going to hike around Europe. I’ve barely gotten a postcard from him since! And he does this all the time. It’s not the first time he’s left them alone. Please, I can’t leave them, too. They need me!”
Kristoff held up a hand, and Miriam held her breath. His eyes were so hard… “We know all about your brother. Chloe’s ranted to her mates often enough for us to hear.”
“Chloe’s my friend,” Miriam blubbered. Anything to stop them from killing her! “She’ll know about this!”
“She’s right about that,” Lucas said with a nod. “And Chloe is our alpha’s mate. Which means…” He gestured toward Miriam, but she didn’t know what it meant. He pushed away from the wall and sidled up to her, going to one knee beside her. He let out a heavy sigh and shook his head. “Listen, Miriam. You have really gotten yourself into a bad situation this time. I’m not sure what we are going to do with you.”
“You could just let me go,” Miriam mumbled, her heart sinking. They were going to kill her, and her nephews were never going to have anybody to love them again. “I don’t want them to think I abandoned them like their father.”
Here, Kristoff snorted. “They’ll get over it. I was abandoned by my parents and bounced around between relatives that didn’t want me, and I turned out just fine.”
Lucas laughed. “Right. Mr. Anti-Social who can’t stand for anybody to be within three feet of him turned out alright. That’s a joke.”
“Hey!” Kristoff glowered at him. “That’s not what we’re dealing with right now. She saw us burying the body, Lucas. We can’t just let her go and you know that.”
“Yeah, but Sly is going to be pissed when he finds out about this.” Lucas was still staring so intently at her that she couldn’t look away. There was a furrow in his brow—maybe he didn’t want to kill her? Maybe she could get through to him?
“Chloe is my friend,” she repeated. “And she’s mated to Sly and Devon. Your alpha and his second in command.”
“We are aware,” Kristoff grumbled.
“Well, we need to report this to Sly,” Lucas said, and Miriam’s gaze was drawn back to him. He wasn’t looking at her anymore and stood, shaking his head. “He is going to be seriously pissed.”
An idea blossomed in her mind. If they were concerned about getting in trouble with their alpha, maybe there was a way they could work this out. Her mind dashed all over the place as she tried to figure out how this could work to her advantage.
“But you don’t have to tell him if I don’t say anything, right?” she blurted, pulling all the harder against her ropes. “And I promise I won’t! I can’t go anywhere, I don’t have the money to run from you, and I wouldn’t put my nephews in that danger, anyway. So, if I don’t say anything and I just pretend like life is normal, then you have no reason to get in trouble with Sly.”
Lucas stood. He and Kristoff glanced at each other, as though waiting for the other to make a decision here.
And something els
e tickled at the back of her mind. Hadn’t she met some of the women who came up to Lucas’ place when she worked at the diner? And even though they wore clothes that covered most of them, there had been distinctive bruises on their skin. When she had asked one of them what they were from, the woman had smugly informed her that it came from handcuffs and slave play.
And now she blurted it out before she could think too hard about the consequences. “I’ll be your slave. I’ll do whatever you tell me to do, I’ll drop everything to serve you whenever you want me—except my nephews,” she added, because she wasn’t going to put them in a lurch. “I mean, I won’t leave them alone or miss anything important going on in their lives or—"
Lucas held up his hand. “We get it. A slave, huh? It’s been a while since I’ve had a slave around.”
There was an eager look in his eye, and Miriam forced herself not to flinch. Anything to make sure she returned to her nephews. “I’ll do it.”
“What do I want a slave for?” Kristoff grumbled. “What, are you going to wear a pink harem outfit to dust my house?”
Lucas grinned. “She’s curvier than Barbara Eden, though. I was thinking French maid, but I like your harem idea. She can call us Master, too.”
Miriam didn’t like that grin. She forced herself to hold still, though, thinking only of getting home to her nephews before they got out of school.
“Come on, it’s fun,” Lucas said, socking Kristoff’s arm as he continued to grumble. “And having a person in your cabin every once in a while to clean up won’t hurt anything. You know that Chloe’s been worried about your isolationist habits. If you have Miriam hanging around then maybe you can get Chloe to stop nagging you about joining the others for dinners all the time.”
“Hmmm…” Kristoff stroked his chin. “That’s true. Very well. I can agree to a trial run on this at least. Don’t tell anyone about what you saw and come up here once a week or so to clean up. We’ll see what happens from there, then.”
A sense of weight lifting off her washed over Miriam. The tears came back, thicker this time as she sobbed with relief. Lucas cut her ropes, and she rubbed her wrists to get the circulation flowing back into her fingers. As she shakily got to her feet, Lucas held her elbow to steady her. His brow was pinched, but she couldn’t believe that it was in concern.
“Just keep your end of the bargain. And you can call me Lucas in public but in private?” He winked at her. “Call me Master.”
***
Present Day
Miriam brushed her hair away from her neck, taking a moment to readjust the small red-pink vest she wore. Lucas had kept to his word and bought her an I Dream of Jeannie harem outfit to do her work in. It was not at all conducive to cleaning, but she did the best she could. Life was settling back into a routine. To her relief, neither Lucas nor Kristoff had demanded anything sexual of her, being satisfied with her cleaning up for them. Lucas sometimes hung around, watching and teasing her, but more often than not Kristoff wasn’t even there.
The door opened and Miriam grabbed the broom quickly and started to sweep once more. Lucas and Kristoff both strode in. They were shirtless, their skin glistening with sweat. Miriam swallowed, her mouth somewhat dry. Both of them were built like Greek Gods—fitting, since they thought they were so high above normal people as to deserve slaves.
“Ah, good.” Lucas pulled himself up on the barstool next to the kitchen island. “We were hoping you’d be here.”
Miriam held her broom between herself and them. There was something about seeing them half-naked that made her more nervous than normal. “What did you want, Master?”
Kristoff rolled his eyes, but Lucas grinned. “We needed to talk to you.”
“More like tell you things are changing,” Kristoff interrupted. “You and your nephews are going to move up here and live with us. Well. You’ll live with Lucas. You’re not going to live at my cabin.”
Miriam’s eyes widened and she dropped the broom entirely. It had been two months since they’d started this agreement! What had happened that they now thought she needed to move in with him? Especially with her nephews!
She looked down at the skimpy outfit she was wearing, and her cheeks reddened.
“You’ll be wearing normal clothes,” Kristoff assured her as he moved behind her to go through the fridge. “But we don’t want to hear any protests. You can say that rent is too high in town or something. The boys can have the attic, Lucas is going to arrange it so it’s a proper room. You’ll take the office.”
“But… why?” Miriam picked up her broom again and moved the pile of dust and crumbs out of Kristoff’s way. “I haven’t told anybody. I’ve been doing what you say—”
“And this is something else that we’re telling you to do,” Lucas interrupted. He grinned all the wider at her. “Remember, you’re our slave and you must do as you’re told. Now you’re going to be a good girl and do this without arguing, aren’t you? Otherwise, I shall have to punish you.”
Miriam didn’t want to think about what sort of ‘punishment’ he’d come up with. She ducked her head, her nostrils flaring. Reluctantly, she nodded. “Okay. I’ll move. But I don’t want my nephews knowing about…” She gestured at herself. “This. I am not calling you master around them.”
Lucas shrugged. “Fair enough. I already said that Master was your private name for me. Now go get changed, Miriam. You’ve got a lot of work to do before you move up here.”
Chapter Two
Lucas watched Miriam climb into Kristoff’s truck, enjoying the way her jeans pulled against her ass. After getting everything ready for them to move in full time, Miriam and Kristoff were going to pick up her nephews and their things. Lucas’ truck didn’t have the extra seatbelts necessary for three small children.
Lucas had often teased Kristoff about why he needed such a big truck when he couldn’t stand to have people around him. But then, Kristoff was weird. If he wasn’t Tyler’s distant cousin through Tyler’s mom, he would have taken off long ago. He certainly didn’t spend much time even with the other wolves voluntarily except for Tyler and Lucas himself.
Of course, Lucas was only in there because he was Tyler’s cousin on his dad’s side and through Lucas’ stepmother. Complicated, but close enough to family to draw the three of them together long enough for Lucas and Kristoff to become friends, too.
Now that Tyler and his partner Max had a mate of their own, though, hanging out with them wasn’t happening so much, and Kristoff was pulling away all the more.
The truck disappeared around a bend in the road and Lucas let out a heavy sigh as he turned to the trees. His wolf didn’t like Miriam leaving his sight, but he had other issues to deal with. The last thing they needed was for this to get even more complicated. Although, he was pretty unhappy that he wasn’t going to get as much private time with Miriam anymore. He had just started his seduction plan!
Shifting into his wolf form, Lucas headed out into the forest, following the familiar trail from his place to Sly’s cabin. Miriam’s nephews weren’t going to be there all the time, he reminded himself. After all, they had school.
It did mean he was going to have to learn their names, though. The oldest was Geoff, he thought. The youngest… Richard? And the middle one. It started with a D, right? Dirk? No, that didn’t sound right.
Whatever. He would just have to capitalize his time with Miriam when the boys weren’t around. He’d still have her dress up for him, too. He liked seeing her in her harem costume. It just fit her curvy frame so damn well…
He let out a sigh as he came to the river and trotted over the log bridge. For as bad as things could have gotten when Miriam stumbled on them burying that body, it had turned out to be a good thing all in all. Lucas liked to have his slave games, and Miriam was the one to suggest it. He was fairly certain she didn’t exactly understand what the connotations had been when she suggested being their slave, but that was why Lucas was working his way slowly toward the seduction.
/> Normally he couldn’t be bothered with these sorts of slow burns. He wanted women to play with him and then be on their way. Miriam, however,… she was a challenge. And it’d been a while since he’d had a proper challenge.
He put thoughts of her from his mind so that he wouldn’t end up with a bulge in his jeans when he spoke with Sly. Didn’t want his alpha getting the wrong idea after all.
Soon enough, he was at the box mounted on the three that was several meters away from Sly’s place. Inside were clean clothes for all the wolves to dress in when they came to visit. Apparently, Chloe was tired of having naked men walking around all the time. Lucas shook his head, chuckling as he dressed. His alpha had certainly changed since the little vampire had waltzed into his life.
After he was dressed, Lucas trotted through the trees to the cabin. Devon was outside chopping wood. The teen that they’d just sort of adopted, Brian Mortenson, worked with him. Brian glared at Lucas when he headed for the cabin, but Lucas ignored him. The story with that kid was weird and he didn’t care to figure out how it was working out with them all now.
Sly waited for him inside, drawing plans for a table. They all had their ways of making money. Sly and Devon were carpenters. Lucas was currently between jobs… except for the work he did for the pack, of course.
“What’s up, Captain?” Lucas gave him a jaunty salute just because he knew it would annoy Sly. Alpha though he was, Lucas didn’t like taking orders, and he took every opportunity he could to needle Sly. Just to see how far he could push it.
Sly seemed to be in a good mood today because he only rolled his eyes. Then he frowned, and Lucas realized he was wrong. It wasn’t that Sly was in a good mood, it was because he had more important things to get after Lucas for.
“What’s going on with you and Miriam Potter?” Sly asked.
Lucas flinched. “What business is it of yours?”
Sly narrowed his eyes. “It’s my business when my mate is worried about her friend because she has been quiet and withdrawn. Don’t think that the whole town hasn’t noticed that she’s been going up to your place regularly. There’s talk and I want to know exactly what is happening, Lucas.”
