Enslaved by the Wolves Page 13
Roman glared at him. “We want to get back to what matters. Not set the table like a couple of pussies.”
Lucas only grinned at him, having expected a reply like that. “Ah! I see. I shall tell Sly, Devon, Ian, Theron, Tyler, Max and Kristoff what you think of their mates, then. Now just so we’re clear, are you calling them pussies as in—”
“He didn’t mean that,” Omar interjected. He glared at Roman. “Or if he did, then I don’t want to have anything to do with it. I’m not about to have my ass beaten because of him.”
The two of them glowered at each other before Roman snorted and looked away. Lucas smoothed a wrinkle out of the tablecloth and then moved to set up the chairs around the firepit. Omar moved to help him, but Roman went to the wood pile.
“He’s not going to get his position back until he realizes that every role in the pack is one that needs to be filled. And that taking care of each other is just as important as beating up the bad guys,” Lucas mentioned, shaking his head.
Omar sighed. “You don’t have to tell me that.”
Lucas put a hand on his shoulder. “I know that this might not seem like much, but think about it this way. You are here now. You need to make sure to take advantage of every bone Sly offers you. You know what he’s like. You disappointed him and he will be slow to forgiveness. The only way you are going to prove yourselves,” he continued as Roman hauled over a log to toss in the fire pit, “is by going above and beyond in every little thing. You have to have that consistent work. It’s like wooing a lover.”
“Fuck that and fuck you,” Roman snapped at him. “I’m not looking to sleep with Sly, I just want to be back in the pack.”
“Well, then you need to listen to what I said and—”
“Wait.” Omar straightened. “You know, it does seem like everyone in the pack is taking mates.”
Lucas frowned, not liking where this was going.
“So?” Roman snapped.
“So, Sly wants us to prove that we’re reliable, right?” Omar rubbed his hands together, grinning with a devilish look in his eye. “So if we were to take a mate, then that means we’d have someone to be responsible for and he’d have to let us back in!”
Lucas pinched the bridge of his nose. “You guys know that’s not how it works, right?”
“No, he’s right.” Roman nodded as he straightened. “Because if we have mates, then it’s proof we can commit. Or a mate we’re splitting, everyone else is sharing, we might as well.”
“Whoa, that is not—” Lucas tried.
Omar ignored him. “And there are plenty of chicks in town who are desperate for us wolves, we can have our pick of them!”
Lucas sighed. Was this the future of the Wolf Shifters of Devil Mountain?
“Sure,” he said loudly. “Just go and trick a woman into thinking that you love her to convince Sly that you are mature, responsible adults who will put the needs of the pack first. That’s how it works.”
But neither of them was listening to him anymore. They were too busy congratulating themselves on their cleverness. Lucas rolled his eyes, especially when they brought up the fact that Wanda Foster down in town was still free. If they thought that taking advantage of one of Chloe’s friends was going to work…
Well. He owed it to them and Wanda one last attempt to try to turn them from this crazy scheme of theirs. Sly would not be forgiving if he found out about this.
“There are no quick fixes for your situation,” he told them, his expression grave. “And if you don’t take this seriously then—”
A loud crash made him jump and turn. One of the small trees that had been at the edge of the property had fallen over, revealing a rotten, hollow center. And Rick was pinned beneath the branches. Lucas instantly abandoned Roman and Omar, rushing over to Rick while Doug and Geoff tried to pull the tree off of him. It wasn’t until Lucas was there, checking over him, that Rick started to cry.
Moments later, Miriam appeared on the step. Her brow creased in concern.
“It was Geoff’s fault!” Doug shouted.
“Was not!” Geoff pushed him. “He pushed the tree over even though I told him not to.”
Lucas shushed them both and picked Rick up. The boy clung to him, crying all the louder as he carried him into the house. Once inside, both he and Miriam checked the boy over again. There were some scratches on his face from the branches, but it looked like it scared him more than anything. Geoff and Doug stood by, with matching expressions somewhere near sullen and worried.
“Is everything okay?” Chloe asked, coming out of the kitchen. She cradled her large, pregnant belly in her arms.
“Fine,” Lucas assured her. “We just had a little bit of a scare.”
Miriam nodded, kissing Rick’s head. “Yeah, it was scary but we’re all okay. Boys, can you help Lucas set things up now? And Chloe, I told you to put your feet up for half an hour. It has not been half an hour.”
Chloe made a face at her while Sandra and Angela laughed from another room. “I never should have hired my friend to be my midwife.”
“I’d be your midwife whether you wanted me to be or not,” Miriam shot back. “You’re the first case of vampire-shifter mating—”
“That we know of,” Chloe interjected.
“—And I just want to make sure things go relatively normal. So go put your feet up already.” Miriam gave Chloe a firm look.
Lucas just grinned at Miriam. She didn’t even realize how sexy she was when she did things like that. But it was sexy. Seeing her in charge, watching her be firm with others. Nurturing, caring, doing what she thought was best to take care of the people she cared for. It was just about the sexiest thing she could do, and every time he saw her do something like that, something she didn’t even think twice about, he fell more and more in love with her.
Miriam caught his gaze and gave him a puzzled smile. “What?”
He shook his head. It would be too weird to try to explain, so he summed it up the easiest way possible. “I love you. That’s all.”
“I love you, too.” She shook her head and laughed, then stood and brushed her hands off. “Rick, do you want to help Lucas, or do you want to come and help me make whip cream?”
Rick dried his eyes, shooting glares at his brothers. “Aren’t you gonna wallop them for trying to kill me?”
“Nobody gets walloped anymore,” Miriam said gently. “You know that, and it was an accident. Now, do you want to help me or Lucas?”
“You.” Rick followed her back into the kitchen.
Lucas took Geoff and Doug back outside. Omar and Roman were nowhere to be seen, probably off somewhere hatching their scheme. Lucas sighed as he put the boys to work. This was only going to come back and bite them on the ass, but that was their choice. They had to figure out their own problems.
As for himself… well, he had his mate. He had his partner, who was finally happy. He had his boys. It had not been a path he’d thought he would take, but now that he was here, he wouldn’t have it any other way.
Life was good, and he was going to keep holding onto what he had.
